The 2016 Tacoma Debut
The newly redesigned Tacoma was shown off a the Detroit Auto Sale in January 2015. Toyota is continuing to upgrade the best-selling truck – over 3 million units have been sold since this mid-size truck first made its appearance some 20 years ago. According to Motor Trend, Toyota states that the 2016 Tacoma is even more capable than the outgoing model year.
For 2016 the Tacoma will have a new powertrain, a new suspension, a more efficient transmission, a new look and tons of new features. Instead of the 4.0-liter V-6 engine, the new model year will feature a 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V-6 engine. The engine will features direct/port injection and will supposedly have more horsepower and torque than the current 4.0-liter. The current V-6 engine makes 236 horses and 266 pound-feet of torque.
The Tacoma will also keep the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, though it is unknown at this time whether the auto manufacturer will increase the torque and horsepower ratings. The current 2.7-liter engine makes 159 horses and 180 pound-feet of torque.
A new six-speed automatic transmission will be mated to both engines; and, for those who want the V-6 version, you will have a choice of an optional six-speed manual transmission. Because of the updated technology, there should be an increase in fuel economy, though those numbers have not yet been released.
The trim level designations are the same: the base SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and the Limited. The off-road models will have updated suspension adjustments and will allow you to adjust to surfaced via the Multi-Terrain Select. This system adjusts for wheel spin, throttle response and brake pressure.
Optional equipment for various trim levels will include a locking and limited slip rear differential, clutch start cancel, hill start assist, crawl control and active traction control. The off-road models will offer an optional GoPro mount near the rearview mirror.
The interior has been upgraded, getting rid of a lot of the plastic. The cab – either the Access cab (extended cab) or the double cab – will include softer points and leather; and is more user friendly. It will include a a smart key, push button start, a moon roof, Qi wireless charging, a new audio system, dual climate control, a touch screen, and new safety features.
