Why You Should Visit the City of Kokomo

By nbennett | Posted in Community on Monday, April 6th, 2015 at 6:31 PM

4-6-2015-VisitKokomo

If you are not from Kokomo, this is a city you should visit. There are many sites to see, plus if you are looking for a new Honda or Toyota, you can visit Kokomo Auto World and pick up some great deals while you are visiting.

Chief Kokomo

Be sure to visit Chief Kokomo’s burial place. The town was named after Chief Kokomo; and his grave is located in Pioneer Cemetery on the 400 block of Purdum Street. The Grand Army of the Republic built the cenotaph in 1911.

Darrough Chapel Park

Visit Darrough Chapel Park and the Peace Garden. This garden commemorates Japanese-Americans. Students at Indiana University created a garden using bamboo and stone pillars. Darrough Chapel Park is located at 602 S. Goyer Road.

Also at the park, you’ll find the Darrough Chapel Veteran’s Memorial. The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Park was dedicated in 2002 and it commemorates soldiers who were in the Vietnam Conflict. Veterans’ names are engraved in a stone wall surrounding a statue of a kneeling soldier and in the bricks on the walkway leading to the statue.

The Civil War Cannon

Visit Highland Park’s Visitor’s Center to see the recently restored Kokomo Cannon, a cannon that was originally donated by Thomas J. Harrison Post #30 of the Grand Army of the Republic by Congress on August 8, 1882. Of the two cannons donated, only this one remains. It is a 12-pound bronze field Howitzer. The cannon was originally to honor Civil War veterans, but now honors all veterans.

Vermont Covered Bridge

The only remaining Smith Type #3 truss covered bridge in Indiana lives in Kokomo. The bridge was originally from Vermont, a town about 5 miles east of Kokomo. The bridge is located in Highland Park and is open to foot traffic during the summer months.

Visit Kokomo Auto World

When you are in the area – or even if you are from the area and are visiting these landmarks for the first time – stop by Kokomo Auto World to take advantage of our great prices if you are in the market for a new Honda or Toyota. If you don’t plan in getting a new vehicle this year, be sure to call to schedule a service appointment for maintenance.
