When Should You Test Your Car Battery?

There are times when you will want to test your car's battery. Typically, batteries only last two years, so it's a good idea to check your battery regularly.

There are analog and digital voltmeters on the market, but most experts say the digital is more accurate. You use it similar to jumper cables, connecting the red or positive test line of the voltmeter to the positive battery terminal. Then, connect the black or negative line to the negative battery terminal.

Just make sure your vehicle and all lights, radio are off before you do this. The meter should read between 12.6 and 12.4 if the battery has good power. A lower reading means the battery should be replaced.
